Marcus Ryu
Marcus is a veteran entrepreneur and startup advisor. He was the co-founder and CEO of Guidewire Software, which serves the global P&C industry with a cloud-based core system platform for underwriting, policy administration, billing and claims. He co-founded the company in 2001 and served as the company’s CEO through its IPO in 2012 (NYSE:GWRE) until transitioning to chairman in 2019. Today Guidewire has ARR over $1 billion and a market capitalization of approximately $20 billion.
Marcus currently serves as an independent director of Checkr and Bloomreach and advises several privately held technology companies. Previously, he served on the boards of technology companies MuleSoft, Opower, Procore, Clearwater Analytics, Cornerstone OnDemand, and Bestow.
Marcus joined Battery Ventures' partnership in 2022, focusing on early- and growth-stage technology investments, with an emphasis on vertical enterprise applications. He is currently involved in Battery’s investments in Coram, Fairmatic, hyperexponential, and Descartes Underwriting.
Earlier in his career, Marcus worked as an engagement manager at McKinsey & Co. and was vice president of strategy at Ariba.
Marcus holds an A.B. from Princeton University with highest honors and has a B.Phil. in philosophy from New College, Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar.
